COURSE CURRICULUM

Loyalist College’s Acupuncture program is structured across six semesters, offering a comprehensive blend of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, biomedical sciences, clinical practice, and professional development. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and TCM principles such as Yin/Yang theory, Jing Luo channels, Qi Gong, and Tui Na massage. They also explore the professional identity of acupuncturists and begin developing essential clinical and communication skills. The second semester advances these foundations with courses in TCM diagnosis, point location, jurisprudence and safety, and introduces global perspectives through a general education elective. The third semester shifts toward clinical readiness, emphasizing needling techniques, safety procedures, and the management of musculoskeletal conditions, alongside an introductory clinical practice course. In semester four, students deepen their technical skills in acupuncture modalities and therapeutics while beginning their first clinical placement. They also learn health assessment, engage in Qi Gong practices, and are introduced to research methods. The fifth semester builds on previous learning through advanced therapeutics and pharmacology, with students participating in a second clinical placement and exploring collaborative healthcare practices, nutrition, and herbal medicine. In the final semester, students synthesize their training through advanced case-based learning, a comprehensive review of competencies, and their third clinical placement. They refine their treatment planning and clinical reasoning while developing practice management skills to prepare for professional success. This final phase ensures graduates are fully equipped to deliver safe, ethical, and effective acupuncture care within an integrative healthcare environment. The program’s progression from theoretical foundations to applied clinical expertise allows students to develop into confident, competent TCM practitioners ready for regulated practice in Ontario.
