COURSE CURRICULUM

The welding and fabrication program at Loyalist College offers comprehensive training through progressive, hands-on courses designed to prepare students for diverse industry roles. In Semester One, students develop foundational skills in computer applications, layout, fitting, welding techniques (including oxyacetylene, brazing, SMAW, and GMAW), technical math, and occupational health and safety, while learning to interpret fabrication plans and develop welding theory. Semester Two builds on this foundation with advanced fitting and layout, including AutoCAD, metallurgy, and more complex welding processes such as MCAW, FCAW, and GTAW, alongside theory exploring robotics, automation, and welding codes. Students also take a course in becoming a global changemaker, broadening perspectives on social and environmental issues. In Semester Three, students refine communication skills and explore business start-up concepts while advancing their technical abilities in computer-aided pattern development, welding, and distortion control, incorporating non-destructive testing methods for quality assurance. Semester Four focuses on computer-aided steel detailing, fabrication and assembly of complex weldments, advanced layout and template development using CNC equipment, and rigging and installation techniques. The final welding course emphasizes mastery of Flux Core Arc Welding and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding in multiple positions. This curriculum integrates practical shop projects with theoretical knowledge to ensure students meet industry standards and certification requirements, preparing them for successful careers in welding, fabrication, and related trades.
