COURSE CURRICULUM

The Developmental Services Worker (DSW) program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students to support individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, autism, and dual diagnoses. In the first semester, foundational courses focus on developing college-level writing skills, understanding the nature of disabilities, and exploring core concepts like empathy, self-determination, and person-centred support. Students also study the historical evolution of developmental services and learn about social role valorization to address societal devaluation. The second semester builds on this foundation by introducing standards of practice, legislation, positive behaviour supports, person-centred planning, and teaching strategies, alongside a supervised 10-week field placement that integrates theory with practical experience. In the third semester, students deepen their ethical understanding, inclusive practices, medication administration, and health promotion skills, while engaging in a 12-week placement to refine their practical abilities. The final semester emphasizes leadership, family support, and advanced field placement for 12 weeks, focusing on community inclusion, advocacy, and change dynamics. Throughout the program, students develop professional communication and critical thinking skills, preparing them to work effectively in diverse community settings. Graduates leave equipped to advocate for and empower people with disabilities, fostering independence, inclusion, and well-being. This blend of theory, hands-on learning, and real-world experience ensures DSWs are ready to make a meaningful impact in their field.
