COURSE CURRICULUM

This comprehensive Building Sciences program provides students with a robust foundation in construction methods, materials, codes, and standards across four semesters. In the first semester, students explore essential topics such as Ontario’s Building Code for houses and small buildings, common construction materials like concrete, masonry, wood, and steel, and hands-on construction techniques including wood framing and tool safety. Courses in math, technical communication, geomatics, and Microsoft Office applications support the technical learning. The second semester advances students’ knowledge with courses on residential building design focusing on exterior walls and roofs, heavy construction materials and methods, materials testing, plan reading and drafting using AutoCAD, statics, and career research skills to prepare for the industry. In the third semester, students deepen their expertise in construction supervision and teamwork, advanced construction techniques involving concrete and steel erection, engineering and construction surveying with AutoCAD Civil 3D, materials testing, advanced drafting, and strength of materials, while also taking a general education course. The fourth semester covers medium-scale commercial masonry construction and detailing, environmental legislation, contracts and estimating, mechanical and electrical systems in buildings, soil mechanics, structural systems, and drafting for wood, steel, and concrete structures. Students build a comprehensive understanding of construction management, site supervision, legislation, and practical design and drafting skills, preparing them for diverse roles in building sciences and construction industries. This program blends theory, technical skills, and real-world application to equip graduates with the tools needed for success in the Canadian construction sector.
