COURSE CURRICULUM

The welding and fabrication program at Loyalist College offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed in the industry. In Semester One, students begin with COMP1017 Computer Applications, where they learn Microsoft Office tools like Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel, along with internet use and maintenance management systems, while also developing job search skills including résumé and cover letter preparation. Core technical courses include WELD1013 Fitting 1, focusing on equipment, tools, and fabrication processes for small projects, and WELD1012 Layout 1, which teaches blueprint reading and drafting standards based on ISO and CSA guidelines. Occupational health and safety is covered in SAFE1003, where students study workplace hazards and WHMIS legislation through both theory and practical activities. Technical Math 1 (MATH1027) develops foundational math skills necessary for the trade. Practical welding skills start with WELD1000 Welding 1, covering oxyacetylene welding, brazing, cutting, SMAW, and GMAW, alongside safety and electrode identification, supported by WELD1001 Welding Theory 1, which provides the theoretical background for these processes. Semester Two builds on this foundation with advanced courses such as WELD1014 Fitting 2 and WELD1011 Layout 2, introducing AutoCAD for computer-aided design and deeper drawing interpretation. Metallurgy 1 (WELD1006) explores metal properties, welding effects, and inspection techniques. Technical Math 2 (MATH1028) enhances problem-solving with algebra, trigonometry, and graphical analysis. Welding 2 (WELD1003) introduces advanced welding processes including MCAW, FCAW-G, and GTAW, while Welding Theory 2 (WELD1004) delves into production welding, automation, weld faults, and codes. The course GNED1100 Becoming a Global Changemaker broadens perspectives on cultural competency, sustainability, and community impact, preparing students with critical skills beyond technical expertise. Together, these courses create a well-rounded education that prepares students for the demands of the welding and fabrication industries.
