COURSE CURRICULUM
The Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning (HRAC) program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in HVAC/R systems through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills across four semesters. In the first semester, foundational courses such as Communications-Common Core develop essential workplace communication skills, while Electrical Fundamentals introduce students to basic electricity, electrical circuits, and the use of electrical test meters relevant to heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning applications. Gas Fundamentals covers natural gas and propane properties, combustion processes, safety practices, and installation techniques, including adherence to Ontario Occupational Health and Safety standards and manufacturer specifications. Refrigeration 1 familiarizes students with refrigeration theory, the refrigeration cycle, mechanical components, and safe tool use, alongside hands-on tubing projects. Technical Math 1-HRAC prepares students with analytical and algebraic skills necessary for the technical calculations in the field. In the second semester, Electrical Controls for HRAC focuses on building electrical services, electromechanical and electronic controls, and troubleshooting wiring diagrams with practical applications such as relays and timers. Gaseous Fuels: Supply and Venting Requirements teaches students about cylinders, regulators, gas meters, venting, and combustion air requirements, as well as installation practices for propane and natural gas systems. Refrigeration 2 builds on earlier refrigeration knowledge, exploring refrigerants, system calculations using charts, equipment sizing, and heat pump operation. Additionally, the Becoming a Global Changemaker course broadens students' perspectives on cultural competency, Indigenous education, sustainability, and community impact, equipping them with skills beyond technical expertise. Together, these courses establish a solid foundation for students to advance their knowledge and skills in HVAC/R, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet industry demands in safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
