COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Construction Renovation program, students gain foundational skills through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical application. Semester One courses build core competencies in tool handling, safety, and construction basics. Applied Building and Construction Theory and Building Construction Techniques 1 focus on hand and power tool usage, wood structures, joints, and layout techniques. Building Construction, Codes and Standards 1 introduces Ontario Building Code regulations, particularly site work and structural systems for small buildings. Building Methods & Materials examines construction materials, performance, and installation techniques. Mathematical foundations are established in Computations for Construction & Renovation, while Computer Applications/CAD 1 and Drafting Studio introduce AutoCAD and blueprint reading. Health & Safety training ensures awareness of jobsite hazards and results in essential safety certifications. In Semester Two, students deepen their practical skills with Basic Finishing Techniques, learning drywalling, insulation, and interior/exterior trim work. Building Construction Techniques 2 advances framing knowledge for floors, walls, roofs, and stairs. Building Construction, Codes and Standards 2 emphasizes code-compliant design for residential wood-framed structures. Drafting skills continue in CAD 2, using industry-standard software to produce detailed construction documents. Communications-Common Core builds effective workplace communication, while Residential Estimating introduces quantity take-offs and cost estimation based on contract drawings. The semester concludes with Becoming a Global Changemaker, a general education course designed to develop cultural awareness, sustainability literacy, and social responsibility.
