ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Loyalist College, officially known as Loyalist College of Applied Arts and Technology, is an English-language post-secondary institution located in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1967, the college was part of a broader provincial initiative aimed at expanding career-oriented education through diploma and certificate programs, as well as continuing education, across Ontario communities. Its creation marked a significant shift in the province’s educational landscape, which until then had primarily relied on trade schools and universities, many of which had served returning war veterans. The college was named to honor the United Empire Loyalists who originally settled in the Belleville area. Loyalist College initially operated out of a local high school before moving in 1968 to its current 200-acre campus on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road. The institution has since expanded its reach, operating a satellite campus in Bancroft and maintaining a partnership with the First Nations Technical Institute located in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory reserve. Loyalist College is also partnered with the private Toronto Business College, further extending its educational network. The student population is diverse, consisting not only of local residents from Belleville and nearby towns, but also a significant number of international students, particularly from South Asian countries. These students typically come to Canada on international study visas, contributing to the cultural and academic diversity of the campus. Over the years, Loyalist College has become a vital educational hub in the region, offering a wide range of programs aimed at preparing students for employment in various skilled trades and professional fields. The institution's growth reflects its commitment to accessible, practical education that meets both local and international student needs while honoring the historical legacy of its founding community.
