COURSE CURRICULUM

The Special Care Counselling program at LaSalle College includes a comprehensive range of concentration courses designed to prepare students for professional practice. Key courses cover the fundamentals of the special care counselling profession, including intervention processes such as observation, helping relationships, and intervention plans. Students study child, adolescent, adult psychology, and specific challenges like learning difficulties, addictions, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and physical and neurological disabilities. The program emphasizes practical skills with courses on planning and leading activities, communication, crisis intervention, and family support, as well as an intercultural approach to working with diverse populations. Ethical and political issues, violence, victimology, and aging processes are also addressed to provide a broad understanding of the field. A major component of the program is extensive internships totaling over 800 hours across three placements, allowing students to gain hands-on experience applying their knowledge in real-world settings. General education courses supplement the specialized training with a focus on core cultural knowledge, skill development, and responsible citizenship. These include physical education, philosophy, language and literature, second languages, and complementary courses. This well-rounded curriculum ensures graduates develop both the practical and theoretical skills necessary to excel as compassionate and effective special care counsellors, prepared to work in diverse environments and make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with special needs.
