COURSE CURRICULUM

Langara College’s Library & Information Technology Diploma Program offers a Flexible Participation Option designed for distance learners, allowing students to complete the 61-credit program fully online. This option is ideal for individuals balancing work, living outside the Lower Mainland, or unable to attend campus. Students must take at least one LIBR course (three credits) in two semesters each year, including their first two terms, and may take up to 16 program credits per semester. While a limited number of courses are offered each term and availability varies, students wishing to finish within three years are encouraged to take courses when scheduled. The curriculum includes foundational courses such as Business Computer Applications, Online Search and Information Handling, Introduction to Cataloguing, Philosophy and Functions of Libraries, and Technical Services. Practical learning is emphasized through two field work placements. Advanced courses include Subject Analysis and Classification, Library Systems, Reference Services, and RDA/MARC cataloguing. Students also select three specialized LIBR courses, covering topics like records management, children's services, or digital collections. Additionally, one Canadian content course from a broad interdisciplinary list, six credits of English or Communications, and nine general elective credits are required. All program courses must be passed with a minimum grade of "C" (or "S" in S/U graded courses) to maintain standing and graduate. This flexible, accredited program prepares students for careers in academic, public, and special libraries by equipping them with essential technical, organizational, and customer service skills.
