COURSE CURRICULUM

The Women’s Studies Program at Langara College offers an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to examine the diverse experiences, histories, and social realities of women from critical and feminist perspectives. Students working toward the Associate of Arts Degree in Women’s Studies must complete a minimum of 60 credits, including core and elective courses. All students are required to take WMST 1105, a lecture series with no credit or fee, WMST 1116 Investigating Women's Realities, and WMST 1216 Exploring Women's Lives. In addition, students must choose one of the following: WMST 2270 Gender Currents: Femininity, Masculinity, and Beyond, WMST 2272 Women and Social Change, or WMST 2274 Women and Sexuality. Students are also required to take three additional courses, which may include WMST 1195 Special Topics I, WMST 1220 Women and Health, WMST 1230 Women and Popular Culture, or any of the 2270, 2272, or 2274 courses not previously taken to fulfill earlier requirements. Furthermore, students may choose approved sections of courses from various departments that include a minimum of 30% Women's Studies content, such as ABST, AHIS, ANTH, CLST, CNST, CRIM, ECON, ENGL, HIST, LAMS, PCCN, POLI, RELS, and SOCI. These interdisciplinary electives enhance the program by providing broader contexts for understanding gender, social structures, and feminist analysis. This combination of core and elective courses allows students to explore a variety of social issues from gendered perspectives and prepares them for further studies or careers in advocacy, education, social services, public policy, and related fields.
