COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation Leadership Diploma program requires a total of 60 credits and offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in recreation and community leadership. Core courses include Introduction to Business in Canada and Introduction to Marketing, which provide foundational business knowledge. Recreation-specific courses such as Foundations of Leisure and Recreation, Direct Leadership in Recreation, and Valuing Diversity in Leadership develop essential skills for working with diverse populations and leading recreational programs. Students also study Recreation Program Planning, Introduction to Recreation Facilities and Environments, and Applied Skills in Recreation Operations to gain practical knowledge in managing programs and facilities. The curriculum further includes courses on The Arts and Heritage in Recreation, Personal Portfolio Development and Seminar, and Applied Leadership in Recreation Organizations to enhance leadership and professional development. Internship Orientation and Portfolio Development, as well as Recreation Issues and Trends, prepare students for real-world challenges and trends in the field. Communication skills are emphasized through courses such as Interpersonal Communications, Academic Writing, and Written Communications, offering several options to fulfill these requirements. Students must complete a 12-credit Recreation Internship or a Diploma Reflective Practicum in the Workplace to gain hands-on experience. Additionally, students select one elective from any Langara course eligible toward a credential, allowing some flexibility in their studies. This well-rounded program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to succeed as recreation leaders and contribute meaningfully to community wellness.
