COURSE CURRICULUM

The Library & Information Technology Diploma Program at Langara College requires the completion of 61 credits over two years, combining core library courses, electives, and practical experience to prepare students for careers in various library and information management settings. In the first year, students complete foundational courses such as Business Computer Applications, Online Search and Information Handling, Introduction to Cataloguing, and Library Philosophy and Functions. They also take Field Work I for practical experience, along with courses on Technical Services and Circulation, and one English or Communications course. Additionally, students select one course from a broad list of library-focused special topics or service-oriented courses, and one course from a wide selection that includes Aboriginal studies, Canadian history, business, political science, and cultural studies. One general elective completes the first-year requirements. In the second year, students build advanced skills through courses in Subject Analysis and Classification, Library Systems and Information Design, Reference Services, and RDA/MARC Cataloguing, along with a second field placement (Field Work II). They also select two different special topics courses not previously taken, an additional English or Communications course, and two general electives. The program offers a well-rounded education that includes theoretical knowledge, practical training, and flexible course choices, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests or career goals. Emphasis on hands-on experience through field work placements, alongside technical training in cataloguing, digital resource management, and customer service, ensures graduates are workforce-ready for roles in public, academic, special, or corporate libraries and information service environments.
