COURSE CURRICULUM

The Latin American Studies program at Langara College offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the geography, culture, history, and political economy of Latin America. Within the Associate of Arts Degree framework, students must complete a minimum of 60 credits, starting with the required course LAMS 1100, Introduction to Latin America, which provides a foundation for studying the region. Following this, students select three courses from various Latin American Studies classes, including topics like social change, environmental issues, arts and culture, biographical histories, resistance literature, and contemporary news. These courses offer diverse perspectives on the complexities and richness of Latin America. In addition, students choose three courses from related fields such as anthropology, geography, political science, and art history, which complement the core curriculum. Options include regional anthropology, global art views, geography of money and power, international relations, and peace and conflict studies. The program also encourages students to develop language skills by offering several levels of Spanish courses, from beginner to intermediate, which enhance cultural understanding and communication. Courses focusing on peace, conflict resolution, and special topics further broaden the student’s grasp of global and regional issues. This well-rounded curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for advanced study or careers related to Latin America. The program is flexible, allowing students to tailor their studies according to their interests while maintaining a strong interdisciplinary foundation. With university-transferable courses, students can continue their education in related bachelor’s degree programs or apply their learning directly in professional or community settings, making the Latin American Studies program a comprehensive and valuable academic path.
