COURSE CURRICULUM

The Langara Fine Arts Diploma requires a total of 60 credits and offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to build strong foundational skills and critical understanding in art and design. Core courses include AHIS 2250, Introduction to Critical and Cultural Theory, which provides students with essential theoretical frameworks for analyzing art and culture. Students engage in a variety of studio courses such as Foundation Ceramics (FINA 1111), Introduction to Drawing I and II (FINA 1120 and 1220), Foundation Painting (FINA 1131), Foundation Design Studio (FINA 1142), Foundation Media Studio (FINA 1143), Foundation Sculpture (FINA 1161), and Foundation Printmaking (FINA 1171), allowing hands-on exploration across multiple mediums. The program emphasizes professional development through courses like Professional Practice in Arts and Design (FINA 2180), which prepares students for careers or further education in creative fields. Language and communication skills are supported with one course chosen from ENGL 1100 or ENGL 1123, plus another from ENGL 1129 or ENGL 1130, fostering critical reading and writing abilities. Additionally, students complete six credits of art history (AHIS) courses to deepen their cultural and historical knowledge. The final component includes 18 credits of advanced FINA courses at the 2000 level or higher, enabling specialization and skill refinement. This well-rounded curriculum equips students with both practical studio experience and theoretical knowledge, preparing them for transfer to university programs or entry into the art and design professions.
