COURSE CURRICULUM
The Family Studies curriculum provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to understanding the family through history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and literature. Students are required to complete core courses such as FMST 1115 (Perspectives on Family Studies), HIST 1155 (The History of the Family in Western Society), PHIL 1100 (Introduction to Philosophy: Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy), PSYC 2319 (Psychology of the Family), and SOCI 2250 (The Sociology of the Family). These courses offer essential knowledge on family dynamics, historical contexts, ethical considerations, psychological development, and sociological factors influencing families. Additionally, students choose one academic writing course from ENGL 1123, 1127, or 1128 to enhance their writing and critical thinking skills. A literature course is also required, selected from ENGL 1129 or 1130, which introduces modern literary works related to family themes. For further literary exploration, students must select one course from ENGL 2222 (Classical Literature in Translation), ENGL 2225 (Canadian Literature), ENGL 2234 (Literature from a Feminist Perspective), or ENGL 2237 (Exploring Literature). The curriculum includes three electives from various fields such as anthropology (ANTH 1120), classical studies (CLST 1102), communications (CMNS 1115), conflict resolution (PCCN 1202), psychology (several developmental and health psychology courses), and women’s studies (WMST 1116, 1216, 1195). This wide range of electives allows students to tailor their studies to specific interests, such as family health, development, gender issues, or social justice. Overall, the program equips students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation, preparing them for careers in social services, counseling, education, or further academic study related to families and social well-being.
