COURSE CURRICULUM

The Design Formation Diploma at Langara College requires the successful completion of 60 credits over four terms, offering a comprehensive and interdisciplinary foundation in design. In Term One, students take core courses in Communication Design I, Interiors and Architecture I, Experiential Design I, and Graphic Design Software Fundamentals, along with one communications course (CMNS 1115, 1118, 1122, or a university-transferable ENGL). Term Two builds on this with Communication Design II, Interiors and Architecture II, Experiential Design II, Material, Process and Sustainability, and a design history elective (either DSGN 1100 or 1200). In Term Three, students continue with Communication Design III: Typography, Page Layout Software, Establishing a Career in Design, another design history elective (DSGN 1300 or 1400), and one design area elective. The final term includes Portfolio development and a Work Experience component, alongside 12 credits of design area electives. Electives allow students to specialize in Communication Design (e.g., Branding and Marketing, Web Design Fundamentals), Experiential Design (e.g., Media and Technology in Experiential Design), or Interiors and Architecture (e.g., Site and Context in Architectural Design). This well-rounded curriculum equips students with practical skills, creative thinking, and professional readiness through hands-on projects, studio learning, and real-world experience, preparing them for further education or entry-level careers in various design disciplines.
