COURSE CURRICULUM
The Criminology program requires students to complete a total of 60 credits, divided evenly between Year One and Year Two courses. In the first year, students take foundational courses including Introduction to the Criminal Justice System (CRIM 1115), Introduction to Canadian Law and Legal Institutions (CRIM 1116), Introduction to Criminology (CRIM 1125), Criminal Law (CRIM 1216), and Introduction to Government and Politics (POLI 1100). Psychology courses such as Introduction to Biological, Cognitive, and Developmental Psychology (PSYC 1115) and Introduction to Social, Personality, and Abnormal Psychology (PSYC 1215) are included alongside Sociology (SOCI 1120) and an English writing course from options like ENGL 1123, 1127, or 1128. Students must take CRIM 1115 and 1116 early, as these are prerequisites for advanced criminology courses. Year Two expands into more specialized topics such as Research Methods in Criminology (CRIM 1220), Psychological and Sociological Explanations of Criminal and Deviant Behaviour (CRIM 2103 and 2104), Criminal Law and Court Procedure (CRIM 2316), and Ethics in Justice and Law (CRIM 2417). Written Communications (CMNS 1118) and Philosophy (PHIL 1100) are also required. Students choose electives from courses focusing on Indigenous justice, forensic anthropology, mental health, social problems, and statistical methods. Some advanced courses require a minimum grade of "C" in specific prerequisite courses, particularly in psychology and English, to ensure readiness for complex material. Overall, the program balances core criminology theory with social sciences and communication skills, preparing students for further study or careers in criminal justice.
