COURSE CURRICULUM

The Post-Degree Diploma in Applied Planning requires a total of 45 credits completed over three terms, each consisting of 15 credits. In Term 1, students take foundational courses including Introduction to Planning, Planning Applications in GIS, Planning Theory, Practice, and Ethics, Introduction to Planning Methods, Planning Process and Law, and Special Topics I, providing a strong base in planning principles, ethics, law, and practical skills. Term 2 builds on this foundation with courses such as Land Development, Urban and Rural Planning, Social Planning and Community Development, Environmental Planning, and three Special Topics courses, offering a broader understanding of diverse planning areas including environmental and community development. The final term, Term 3, emphasizes advanced skills with courses in Advanced Planning Methods, 3D Computer Applications in Planning, a Planning Studio focused on Sustainability, a Major Project worth five credits, and Special Topics V. This term is designed to integrate knowledge through practical application and project-based learning, culminating in a significant major project that demonstrates the students’ ability to apply their learning to real-world planning challenges. Throughout the program, the inclusion of special topics courses allows students to explore current trends and specialized areas in planning. The curriculum combines theory, practical skills, technology, and ethical considerations, preparing graduates for diverse careers in planning within government, consulting, non-profit organizations, and Indigenous communities. The 12-month structure and comprehensive course design ensure that students develop both the technical expertise and critical thinking necessary for success in the dynamic field of applied planning.
