COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Service Worker Certificate program at Langara College requires the successful completion of 42 credits over two terms. In Term One, students take PSYC 1115 (Introduction to Biological, Cognitive, and Developmental Psychology), SSRV 1115 (History and Philosophy of Social Work), SSRV 1116 (Social Service Methods I), SSRV 1117 (Social Problems), SSRV 1118 (Community Practice Skills), SSRV 1131 (Social Service Field Work I), and SSRV 1132 (Integrated Experiential Learning I), alongside one of ENGL 1123, 1127, or 1128 to fulfill half of the six required university-transferable English credits, for a total of 19 credits. This term introduces foundational concepts in psychology and social service, combining theoretical knowledge with fieldwork and hands-on experiential learning. In Term Two, students continue their studies with PSYC 1215 (Introduction to Social, Personality, and Abnormal Psychology), SSRV 1119 (Social Service Methods II), SSRV 1120 (Social Policy), SSRV 1121 (Family in Society), SSRV 1219 (Responding to Trauma), SSRV 1230 (Social Service Field Work II), SSRV 1232 (Integrated Experiential Learning II), and SSRV 1233 (Social Service Field Work III), which includes a five-week block practicum. Students also complete the second half of their English requirement by choosing from ENGL 1129 or 1130, or another eligible university-transferable English course. This second term, totaling 23 credits, builds on core competencies and deepens practical and theoretical understanding, with an emphasis on trauma response, policy analysis, and family dynamics. Graduates are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and real-world experience to pursue careers in social service settings or further academic study in related disciplines.
