COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Arts Writing Certificate at Langara College requires a total of 30 credits over two intensive terms, offering a comprehensive education in screenwriting and film production. In Term 1, students complete five courses totaling 15 credits, including Feature Film Lab, The Short Film, Principles of Production, Collaboration: The Writer, and Art of the Short Film. These courses focus on developing foundational skills in writing, collaborating with other film professionals, and understanding the principles behind successful film production. In Term 2, students continue to build on this foundation with advanced courses such as Series Television Lab: Pilots and Bibles; Story Editing, Adaptations, Animation & Children's Television, Career Development for the Film Industry, Film Festival and Distribution, and a Production Practicum for the Writer, totaling another 15 credits. The practicum offers hands-on experience producing films based on students’ own scripts, enabling them to gain real-world skills in production while collaborating closely with directors and actors. The program culminates with students showcasing their work at the annual Film Arts Festival, providing essential industry exposure. This certificate equips students with expertise in scriptwriting, story editing, pitch writing, and production techniques, preparing them for dynamic careers in film and television writing. Through both classroom learning and practical experience, students graduate with a professional portfolio and the skills needed to thrive in today’s competitive film industry.
