COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Arts Certificate in Directing at Langara College requires a total of 30 credits completed over two terms, designed to provide students with comprehensive training in directing for the screen. In Term One, students take courses such as Editing Techniques, Styles and Digital Camera, Visualization, Principles of Production, Collaboration: The Director, and Art of the Short Film, totaling 15 credits. These foundational courses focus on developing technical skills, creative visualization, and collaborative abilities essential for directing. Term Two, also worth 15 credits, includes Case Studies, Advanced Cinematography - Staging, Online Finishing and Sound Mix, Career Development for the Film Industry, Film Festival and Distribution, and a substantial Production Practicum for the Director. This practicum allows students to apply their learned skills in real-world production settings, directing festival-quality films while gaining hands-on experience. The program emphasizes both artistic and practical aspects of filmmaking, preparing students to confidently lead productions, work closely with cast and crew, and navigate the film industry’s business and festival landscapes. Through rigorous coursework and collaborative projects, students graduate with a strong portfolio, technical proficiency, and professional readiness, equipping them to pursue directing careers in a competitive industry.
