COURSE CURRICULUM

The Certificate in Arts & Science (Engineering) at Langara College requires the completion of 40 to 43 total credits over two terms, designed to align with the first-year engineering curriculum at the University of British Columbia (UBC). In Term 1, students take seven core courses totaling 20 to 21 credits, including Introduction to Engineering I (APSC 1000), Engineering Chemistry (CHEM 1154), Engineering Design and Drafting (CPSC 1091), and Physics I with Calculus (PHYS 1125). Programming courses include either Program Design (CPSC 1150) or Program Design for Engineers (CPSC 1155). English options include Introduction to Academic Writing (ENGL 1123) or Essay Writing and Short Prose Selections (ENGL 1127), while Math requirements include Calculus I (MATH 1171 or 1173 with computer explorations). Students must achieve a minimum grade of C- in all Term 1 courses to progress to Term 2 or obtain special approval from the program coordinator.Term 2 also comprises 20 to 21 credits with courses such as Introduction to Engineering II (APSC 1100), Control Systems and Sustainable Engineering Design (CPSC 1491), Engineering Mechanics (PHYS 1219), and Physics II with Calculus (PHYS 1225). English courses include Advanced Written Communications (CMNS 2228), Modern Novel, Poetry, and Drama (ENGL 1129), or other university-transferable English courses. Math courses include Calculus II (MATH 1271 or 1273 with computer explorations) and Linear Systems with Applications or Linear Algebra and its laboratory components. Students should verify English course suitability, especially for UBC admission standards. This program offers a strong foundation in engineering principles and sciences, preparing students for seamless transfer to UBC and other institutions.
