COURSE CURRICULUM

The Education Assistant program at Langara College requires a total of 39 credits and is designed to prepare students for supporting children and youth with diverse needs in school settings. The program is structured into two terms. In Term 1, students complete 18 credits, including core courses such as Behavioral Theory (EDAS 1100), The Process of Learning (EDAS 1110), and The Education Assistant Role in the Education System (EDAS 1120). This term also includes Supporting Personal Care (EDAS 1130), Supporting Teamwork (EDAS 1220), and the first practicum (EDAS 1111), which provides hands-on experience in a school environment.Term 2 consists of 21 credits, with courses focused on Child and Adolescent Development in the School Context (EDAS 1140), Supporting Positive Behaviour (EDAS 1200), Supporting Learning (EDAS 1210), and Supporting Student Communication (EDAS 1230). It also covers Current Issues in Education and the Education Assistant role (EDAS 1240) and includes the second practicum (EDAS 1211), giving students further practical experience. Additionally, students must complete one English course from several options, such as Introduction to Academic Writing or Reading and Writing about Literature, to meet the university-transferable credit requirements. Overall, the program balances theoretical knowledge with practical skills to prepare graduates to excel as competent Education Assistants, ready to support inclusive and diverse classrooms effectively.
