COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certificate program at Langara College requires a total of 42 credits, structured over three terms to provide a comprehensive foundation in early childhood education. In Term 1, students complete five courses totaling 14 credits, including Exploring the Environment I, Foundations of Early Childhood Education, Knowing the Individual Child, Introduction to Program Planning, and Practicum I. These courses introduce students to fundamental concepts about child development, learning environments, and practical experience through supervised fieldwork. Term 2 includes five courses totaling 15 credits: Exploring the Environment II, Human Relations in Early Childhood Programs, Program Planning and Implementation, Practicum II, and a choice between Child Growth and Development I or Developmental Psychology (Early Childhood). This term deepens students' understanding of program delivery, child development theories, and interpersonal skills essential for working with children and families. In Term 3, students complete four courses totaling 13 credits: Child Growth and Development II, Creative Environments for Young Children, Health, Nutrition and Safety, and Practicum III. This final term focuses on advanced child development topics, designing stimulating learning environments, health and safety practices, and extensive hands-on experience through practicum placements. Overall, the program integrates academic knowledge with practical training to prepare students for careers as competent early childhood educators who support the growth and well-being of young children in inclusive, nurturing settings.
