COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry program at Langara College requires students to complete a minimum of 60 credits within the framework of the Associate of Science Degree. Core courses include General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 1120 and 1220), Coordination Chemistry (CHEM 2208), Analytical Chemistry (CHEM 2222), and Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 2316 and 2416), each offering four credits. Mathematics is also a key component, with courses such as Linear Algebra (MATH 2362) and Calculus III (MATH 2371) required for three credits each. Physics is integrated into the curriculum through Physics II with Calculus (PHYS 1225), which carries four credits. For English requirements, students must select one course from options including Introduction to Academic Writing (ENGL 1123), Essay Writing and Short Prose Selections (ENGL 1127), or Short Prose Selections and Composition (ENGL 1128), each worth three credits. Additionally, students choose one course focused on modern literature such as Modern Novel, Poetry, and Drama (ENGL 1129) or Modern Novel, Poetry, and Film (ENGL 1130). The program also mandates a sequence of calculus courses with several options, including Introduction to Calculus I (MATH 1153 and 1253), Calculus I (MATH 1171 or 1173 with Computer Explorations), and Calculus II (MATH 1271 or 1273 with Computer Explorations), ensuring a solid foundation in mathematical principles. Physics I for Life Sciences (PHYS 1101) or Physics I with Calculus (PHYS 1125) can fulfill the physics requirement. This comprehensive curriculum ensures students gain a strong foundation in chemistry, mathematics, and physics, preparing them for further study or careers in the sciences.
