COURSE CURRICULUM

The Associate of Science Degree in Biology at Langara College is designed for students planning to pursue further studies in biology and is aligned with the Biology Flexible Pre-Major, ensuring compatibility with transfer programs across BC post-secondary institutions. Students must complete a minimum of 64 credits, beginning with foundational courses such as BIOL 1115 and 1215 (General Biology I and II), BIOL 2315 (Biochemistry), BIOL 2330 (Genetics), BIOL 2380 (Ecology), and BIOL 2415 (Cell Biology). Core chemistry requirements include CHEM 1120 and 1220 (General Chemistry I and II), as well as CHEM 2316 and 2416 (Organic Chemistry I and II). English requirements consist of one course from ENGL 1123, 1127, or 1128, and one from ENGL 1129 or 1130. Students choose a calculus path from several MATH courses including MATH 1153/1253, 1171, 1173/1183, 1174, or 1175, and continue with a second calculus course from MATH 1271, 1273/1283, 1274, or 1275. Physics requirements include either PHYS 1101 (for Life Sciences) or PHYS 1125 (with Calculus). In addition, students must complete two advanced biology electives from options such as BIOL 2260, 2340, 2350, 2370, 2440, 2450, 2470, 2480, or 3430, or related chemistry and physics courses like CHEM 2222, CHEM 2250, PHYS 1118, or PHYS 1225. To fulfill the arts component, students must complete two first- or second-year arts courses other than ENGL, excluding MATH and lab sciences. This well-rounded curriculum prepares students for upper-level biology programs.
