COURSE CURRICULUM

The Associate of Science Degree in Biology at Langara College requires a minimum of 70 credits, providing students with a comprehensive foundation in biological sciences alongside essential supporting courses. Core biology courses include General Biology I and II (BIOL 1115 and 1215), Biochemistry (BIOL 2315), Introduction to Genetics (BIOL 2330), Introduction to Ecology (BIOL 2380), and Cell Biology (BIOL 2415). Chemistry is integral, with students completing General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 1120 and 1220), as well as Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 2316 and 2416). The program also incorporates a mandatory Co-operative Work Placement (COOP 2301) and a practical course on Employment Strategies for Current Labour Markets (EXPE 2300) to prepare students for workforce integration. Communication skills are developed through one of several English courses, including Introduction to Academic Writing (ENGL 1123) or Modern Novel, Poetry, and Drama (ENGL 1129). Mathematics requirements cover Calculus I and II options tailored for life sciences or broader applications, such as MATH 1171 and 1271 or their computer exploration variants. Physics courses, either Physics I for Life Sciences (PHYS 1101) or Physics I with Calculus (PHYS 1125), are also required. To deepen biological knowledge, students select two advanced courses like Microbiology I (BIOL 2370), Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (BIOL 2350), or Molecular Genetics (BIOL 3430). Additionally, students must complete two arts courses outside English and mathematics to ensure a well-rounded education.
