COURSE CURRICULUM

The Associate of Science Degree in Bioinformatics at Langara College requires students to complete a minimum of 64 credits as part of the general requirements. The curriculum provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation in biology, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics. Students must complete core biology courses including General Biology I (BIOL 1115), General Biology II (BIOL 1215), Biochemistry (BIOL 2315), and Cell Biology (BIOL 2415), which build essential knowledge of molecular and cellular processes. Chemistry requirements include General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 1120 and 1220), providing fundamental chemical principles. Students also complete core computing courses—Program Design (CPSC 1150), Algorithms and Data Structures I (CPSC 1160), and Object-Oriented Computing (CPSC 1181)—which introduce programming and computational thinking. Math requirements include one of Calculus I options (MATH 1171, 1173 and 1183, or 1175) and one of Calculus II options (MATH 1271, 1273 and 1283, or 1275). Students must also complete four additional advanced courses chosen from options such as Genetics (BIOL 2330), Molecular Genetics (BIOL 3430), Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 2316 and 2416), or further computing courses (e.g., CPSC 2150, 2190, 2221). To ensure a well-rounded education, students are also required to complete two university-transferable English courses (6 credits), two university-transferable arts courses (6 credits), and one additional university-transferable course (3 credits). This blend of science and liberal arts ensures that graduates are not only technically proficient but also capable of critical thinking, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration essential in the rapidly growing field of bioinformatics.
