COURSE CURRICULUM

Within the framework of the general requirements of the Associate of Science Degree in Bioinformatics, students must complete a minimum of 70 credits. The core curriculum includes foundational coursework in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and co-operative education. Required biology courses are BIOL 1115 (General Biology I), BIOL 1215 (General Biology II), BIOL 2315 (Biochemistry), and BIOL 2415 (Cell Biology), providing essential knowledge of life sciences. Chemistry requirements include CHEM 1120 and CHEM 1220 (General Chemistry I and II). In computer science, students take CPSC 1150 (Program Design), CPSC 1160 (Algorithms and Data Structures I), and CPSC 1181 (Object-oriented Computing), which introduce computational thinking and programming. Students must also complete EXPE 2300 (Employment Strategies) and COOP 2301 (Co-operative Work Placement I), integrating academic study with practical work experience. In mathematics, students choose one calculus sequence from MATH 1171, 1173 and 1183, or MATH 1175, followed by one of MATH 1271, 1273 and 1283, or MATH 1275. Students also choose four advanced electives from BIOL 2330, BIOL 3430, CHEM 2316, CHEM 2416, CPSC 2150, CPSC 2190, or CPSC 2221. Additionally, students must complete two university-transferable ENGL courses (6.0 credits), two university-transferable arts courses (6.0 credits), and one additional university-transferable course (3.0 credits). This curriculum ensures that graduates are well-equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them for further study or entry into the workforce in the field of bioinformatics.
