COURSE CURRICULUM

Within the framework of the general requirements for the Associate of Arts Degree, students must complete a minimum of 60 credits, including a selection of Political Science courses designed to provide a broad understanding of government, politics, and public policy. Students are required to take four courses from a range of introductory to specialized topics, including Introduction to Government and Politics, Canadian Politics and Government, Introduction to International Relations, Peace and Conflict in the Modern World, Contemporary Ideologies, Special Topics I, and Politics in Developing Nations. These foundational courses offer students a comprehensive overview of political systems and global issues. Additionally, students must complete two courses from advanced options such as Canadian Public Policy, Canadian Public Administration, Introduction to Urban Politics, Topics in Canadian Politics, International Political Economy, BC Politics and Government, Canadian International Relations, Comparative Politics of Western Liberal Democracies, Democratic Socialism, the Politics of Totalitarianism, Western Political Thought, Western Feminist Social and Political Thought, The Human Condition, and Special Topics II. These advanced courses deepen students’ understanding of specific political theories, policies, and movements. Furthermore, students must take one English course from options like Reading and Writing about Literature, Introduction to Academic Writing, Essay Writing and Short Prose Selections, or Short Prose Selections and Composition to strengthen their communication and analytical skills, essential for success in political studies. In total, students must complete three credits in English, supporting their ability to critically engage with complex political texts and ideas. This curriculum equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze political systems critically and prepares them for further study or careers in political science and related fields.
