COURSE CURRICULUM

Within the framework of the general requirements for the Associate of Arts Degree, students must complete a minimum of 60 credits, including courses in geography. Students begin by choosing one of two introductory physical geography courses: GEOG 1111 Introduction to Physical Geography: Planet Earth or GEOG 1180 Our Changing Environment: Climate and Ecosystems, each worth 3 credits. Then, students select two courses from human and regional geography options such as GEOG 1110 Introduction to Human Geography, GEOG 1120 Regional Geography of Canada, GEOG 1130 Urban Geography, GEOG 1150 Geography of British Columbia, GEOG 1155 Environmental Geography, or GEOG 1160 Geographies of Asia-Pacific, each also worth 3 credits. Students who have completed GEOG 1170 may use it as a substitute for GEOG 1110. Next, students choose one course focused on environmental processes between GEOG 1190 Our Changing Environment: Water and Landscapes or GEOL 1107 Dynamic Earth, each 3 credits. For advanced study, three courses are selected from options such as GEOG 2155 Sustainable Resource and Environmental Management, GEOG 2210 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GEOG 2230 Contemporary Canadian Urban Life, GEOG 2250 Geographies of Money and Power, GEOG 2270 Cultural Geography, GEOG 2275 Applied Human Geography, GEOG 2280 Weather, Climate, and Climate Change, GEOG 2290 Advanced Geomorphology, or GEOG 2500 Food, Place, and People. To develop writing skills, students choose one English course from ENGL 1100 Reading and Writing about Literature, ENGL 1123 Introduction to Academic Writing, ENGL 1127 Essay Writing and Short Prose Selections, or ENGL 1128 Short Prose Selections and Composition. Finally, one course from ENGL 1129 Modern Novel, Poetry, and Drama or ENGL 1130 Modern Novel, Poetry, and Film is required. This curriculum combines physical and human geography with strong communication skills.
