COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science program requires several foundational courses to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for environmental research and management. Students will begin with a course in Ecology and Field Biology, where they will study ecological concepts and field-based methods for observing organisms in their natural environments. Limnology, which focuses on the biological, chemical, and physical aspects of freshwater ecosystems such as lakes and rivers, is another core course. Managing Rangeland Ecosystems introduces students to sustainable practices for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem health on rangelands. Field Botany and Plant Taxonomy offers practical experience in plant identification, classification, and taxonomy, emphasizing fieldwork. Students will also complete a course in Scientific Writing and Computer Applications, where they will learn how to effectively communicate scientific findings and use software for data analysis and environmental modeling. In addition, students will study Statistics and Data Management to gain proficiency in statistical methods necessary for analyzing environmental data. A course in Inorganic Chemistry will provide the chemical foundation needed to understand environmental processes, while Environmental Mapping and Technology will teach students how to use geographic information systems (GIS) for spatial data collection and analysis. Introductory Soil Science will give students an understanding of soil properties, types, and conservation practices. Lastly, an Introduction to Wildlife course will focus on the biology, behavior, and conservation of wildlife species, emphasizing their roles in ecosystems. Together, these courses provide a comprehensive foundation for students pursuing careers in environmental science, conservation, and ecological management.
