COURSE CURRICULUM
The animal science livestock science major at Lakeland College offers a well-rounded education combining theory, species-specific study, and hands-on experience. In Year I, students complete core courses totaling 30 credits. Foundational subjects include AE 114 Microeconomics and AE 202 Business Records & Reporting, providing essential business knowledge for managing livestock operations. Animal health and biology are addressed through AN 102 Introduction to Diseases & Treatments, AN 124 Animal Anatomy and Physiology, and AN 133 Animal Handling, Welfare and Ethics. Students also develop communication skills in AN 110 and gain nutritional insight in AN 212 Introduction to Livestock Nutrition. Practical learning begins with AN 265 Introduction to Student Managed Farm, where students prepare for decision-making roles. A species-specific course—chosen from AN 315 Beef Production, AN 316 Bison Production, or AN 330 Dairy Cattle Production—allows students to tailor their focus. CR 188 Range and Forage Management supports understanding of sustainable grazing and feeding systems. In Year II, students further build expertise with 24 credits of required coursework. Financial and marketing skills are strengthened through AE 230 Financial Management and AN 260 Livestock Marketing and Sales. Scientific depth increases with AN 105 Genetics of Livestock, AN 239 Reproductive Physiology, and AN 280 Food Safety and Meat Science. Students select one advanced species course—either continuing or switching focus between beef, bison, or dairy. AN 335 Livestock Production Management and AN 336 Advanced Dairy Nutrition round out the second-year offerings. To complete the program, students choose two experiential learning courses totaling 6 credits. They can join the Student Managed Farm Livestock I and II courses (AN 365 and AN 366) or opt for a customized learning path through AG 250 Industry Practicum and AN 368 Student Directed Livestock Practicum II. This combination of academic rigor and applied learning equips graduates for a range of roles in the livestock industry.
