COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program offers a two-level pathway, with the first year focused on earning a certificate and the second year leading to a diploma. The curriculum combines theoretical coursework with practical field placements to prepare students for a career in early childhood education. Year 1 (Certificate): In the first year, students take a series of foundational courses designed to build knowledge in child development, education, and professional practices. Required courses include Communication Skills, ECE Field Placements I & II, Observation & Play, Early Childhood Professionalism, Health, Safety & Nutrition, Lifespan Studies I, Positive Behaviour Supports, Art, Music & Movement Experiences, Literacy, Math & Science Experiences, Family Studies, and Infant & Toddler Care. These courses equip students with the skills needed to support young children’s development in diverse educational settings. After successfully completing Year 1, students are eligible to apply for graduation with a certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 2) and may then apply for admission to the diploma program. Year 2 (Diploma): In the second year, students build on their knowledge and gain more advanced skills in early childhood education. The year includes ECE Field Placements III & IV, which provide extended hands-on experience in real-world early childhood settings. Other required courses include Leadership & Management in ECE, Outdoor & Nature Play, Emergent Environments for Children, Foundations of Inclusion, Community Advocacy and Partnerships, Supporting Diverse Needs, Sensory Development, and Intercultural Competencies. In addition, students take Infant & Toddler Mental Health to deepen their understanding of young children’s emotional and mental well-being. In Year 2, students also have the option to choose one elective from a list that includes American Sign Language I Part A, Personal Assistance Awareness, Trauma Informed Practices, or Animal Assisted Interventions. The diploma program equips students to work effectively in diverse and inclusive early childhood settings, with a focus on leadership, inclusion, and supporting children’s development in various environments.
