COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child and Youth Care (CYCC) program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to support children, youth, and families in various care settings. The program spans two years, with a blend of theoretical courses and practical field placements. In Year 1, students begin by building foundational knowledge and skills in communication, lifespan development, inclusion, and behavior management. Required courses include Communication Skills, Lifespan Studies I & II, Foundations of Inclusion, Positive Behaviour Supports, Community Advocacy and Partnerships, Family Studies, and Intercultural Competencies. Students also explore the Child & Youth Care Profession and learn about building resiliency. The year includes two field placements: CYCC Field Placement I and CYCC Field Placement II, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world settings. Each of these courses is worth 3 credits, except for the field placements, which are worth 5 credits each. In Year 2, the program continues with more specialized courses focused on supporting diverse needs, trauma-informed practices, and ethical and legal considerations in child and youth care. Students take courses such as Supporting Diverse Needs, Sensory Development, Ethics and Law, Trauma Informed Practices, Foundational Skills in Interviewing, Group Processing & Counselling Theory, Family Support & Engagement, and Mental Health & Substance Abuse. The year culminates in two additional field placements: CYCC Field Placement III and CYCC Field Placement IV, which further prepare students for careers in the child and youth care profession. Each course in Year 2 is worth 3 credits, and the field placements are again worth 5 credits each.
