COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Chemistry (Thesis Option) at Lakehead University is a research-focused graduate program that combines advanced coursework with an original research thesis. To complete the degree, students are required to complete the equivalent of five full course equivalents (FCEs), including two FCEs of graduate-level chemistry courses and a research thesis (Chemistry 5901/9901), which typically accounts for three FCEs. In addition to academic and research components, students must deliver two departmental seminars. The first seminar, presented before the end of the first year, outlines the student’s proposed thesis research and includes a progress review by the Supervisory Committee. The second seminar is a thesis results presentation, which is followed by a formal thesis defense. This final stage usually occurs near the end of the second year of study and is a requirement for graduation. The thesis must reflect original research and demonstrate critical engagement with the field. Overall, the program is designed to provide a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry, with an emphasis on independent research and scholarly communication. It prepares graduates for further academic study or professional roles in research-intensive environments.
