COURSE CURRICULUM

The Faculty of Education at Lakehead University offers a Master of Education (MEd) program designed to foster professional and academic growth through two main fields of study: Educational Studies and Education for Change. The Educational Studies field explores a broad range of topics in educational research, theory, and practice across formal, non-formal, and informal settings, with opportunities to specialize in Gerontology or Gender and Women’s Studies. Education for Change emphasizes social and environmental transformation, featuring specializations in Environmental and Sustainability Education, Indigenous Education, and Social Justice Education, which address pressing issues such as climate change, decolonization, and social equity. Some of these specializations can be combined with Gender and Women’s Studies to provide an interdisciplinary approach. The program offers flexible study options including thesis, portfolio, or course routes, and accommodates both full-time and flex-time students. Small class sizes encourage meaningful interaction among students, instructors, and faculty. Courses are available both on campus and online throughout the academic year, with fall and winter sessions typically running once a week over 12 weeks, and spring and summer courses offered in intensive or online formats. The Faculty is home to two Canada Research Chairs and several research centers, including the Centre for Place and Sustainability Studies, enhancing the academic environment and providing rich learning opportunities. The Gerontology and Gender and Women’s Studies specializations are offered exclusively in the fall intake and promote interdisciplinary collaboration. Overall, the MEd program prepares students to critically engage with contemporary educational issues and advance their careers in diverse educational settings, blending academic rigor with practical application.
