COURSE CURRICULUM

The History Graduate program offers a diverse range of courses designed to deepen students’ understanding of Canadian, European, and world history through focused study and research. Courses such as Canadian Immigration History (HIST 5011) explore the evolution of immigration policies and immigrant experiences in Canada from Confederation to the late twentieth century, while Canadian National Narratives (HIST 5013) traces the development of Canadian history as an academic discipline. Students can examine imperialism and its impacts on the developing world (HIST 5012) or explore modern European history with an emphasis on historiographical and methodological issues (HIST 5014, 5101). Other offerings include specialized topics such as British Social History (HIST 5018), Gender History (HIST 5112), South Asian History (HIST 5114), and Environmental History (HIST 5119), all of which require intensive research projects to develop analytical skills. The program also addresses themes like social justice and human rights (HIST 5019, 5764), colonialism and neo-colonialism (HIST 5116), and twentieth-century Latin American and Caribbean history (HIST 5118). Regional focus courses such as Northern Ontario History (HIST 5017, 5320) highlight local and broader historical contexts. Students have options for credit weight and course structure, including special topics courses (HIST 5701, 5731, 5733) tailored to student and faculty interests. The program culminates with a Major Research Project (HIST 5800) or a Master’s Thesis (HIST 5901), providing rigorous training in historical research and preparing students for doctoral studies or careers requiring advanced analytical skills in history.
