COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science in Geology at Lakehead University is a four-year program that provides students with a comprehensive foundation in Earth sciences, combining classroom learning with practical field and lab experiences. In the first year, students take core courses in Geology (1111, 1131), Chemistry (1110, 1130), English (1015 or 1016), Mathematics (from approved combinations), Physics (1113 and 1133 or 1211 and 1212), and one half-course elective. Students lacking prerequisites in Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics may be required to complete preparatory courses such as Chemistry 1050/1070, Mathematics 1051/1077, or alternate Physics streams. The second year includes intensive geology training through courses like Geology 2311, 2214, 2215, 2217, 2219, 2310, and 2318, plus one FCE elective and a Type E course to meet the Indigenous Content Requirement. In third year, students take Geology 3218, 3310, and 3410; choose two FCEs from upper-level Geology electives; complete Mathematics 2310 and 2311; and take one half-course elective. The final year includes Geology 4161, 4181, and 4313, plus one and a half FCEs from a list of senior Geology electives not previously taken. Students also complete one FCE from Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics, with the option to substitute 0.5 FCE with Natural Resources Management 2350 or Geography 2232. Course selections must be made in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Geology. The program is designed to meet the academic requirements for registration with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO), ensuring graduates are career-ready for roles in industry, research, and environmental consulting.
