COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management at Lakehead University is a comprehensive four-year program that begins with a common first and second year for all students before branching into one of three specializations: Wildlife Conservation and Management, Conservation Planning and Management, or Sustainable Land Use. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through courses in biology, chemistry, economics, English, geography, geology, and natural resources management, along with a first aid certification requirement. The second year deepens technical expertise with courses in forest measurements, ecology, GIS, soils, forest health, and Indigenous perspectives in environmental management. Those specializing in Wildlife Conservation and Management in the third and fourth years focus on wildlife biology, habitat management, and population dynamics, with elective options in biology, outdoor recreation, and geography. This specialization offers eligibility for accreditation as a Certified Wildlife Biologist by the Wildlife Society of America. The Conservation Planning and Management stream emphasizes ecological planning, conservation techniques, political science, and environmental policy, supported by biology and geography electives. The Sustainable Land Use specialization explores integrated land management, political frameworks, and recreational planning, with broad elective flexibility in the upper years. All students take capstone courses in resource policy, environmental management, and integrated resource planning. The program balances ecological science, policy, and hands-on technical training, ensuring graduates are equipped to manage natural resources sustainably and contribute to global environmental solutions.
