COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Lakehead University is a four-year undergraduate program designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in chemical sciences along with essential knowledge in related disciplines. In the first year, students complete foundational courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics, along with one elective from a range of science subjects such as biology, computer science, geology, or anthropology, and an additional elective from approved course types. The second year deepens the focus on core chemistry topics, including organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, while also introducing students to more advanced mathematics and requiring a science elective in physics, math, or computer science, along with another elective. In the third year, students explore more specialized areas such as spectroscopy, advanced organic and inorganic chemistry, and analytical methods, while completing additional chemistry and general electives, including at least one from designated categories if not taken earlier. The final year features a senior-level research project (Chemistry 4901) and advanced coursework in areas such as biochemistry, theoretical chemistry, materials science, and environmental chemistry. Students must also complete electives chosen from a broad list of upper-year chemistry courses and other disciplines, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals. Throughout the program, students benefit from small class sizes, hands-on lab experiences, and opportunities to engage in research with faculty, particularly in the summer. The curriculum not only builds strong theoretical and practical chemistry skills but also encourages interdisciplinary learning, preparing graduates for careers in research, industry, education, or further studies in professional or graduate programs. The structure supports a progressive and flexible learning path, emphasizing both depth and breadth in chemical education and fostering a well-rounded scientific perspective.
