COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science (HBSc) in Applied Life Sciences is a four-year interdisciplinary program offered at the Thunder Bay campus, designed for students interested in the biomolecular and cellular study of living organisms and their practical applications in health, diagnostics, and biotechnology. To remain in the honours program, students must maintain an overall average of at least 70% in all required courses from third and fourth-year Lists 1, 2, and 3, excluding open electives. In the first year, students complete Anthropology 1032, Biology 1050 and 1051, Chemistry 1110 and 1130, Physics 1113/1133 or 1211/1212, Mathematics 1151/1152 or 1171/1172, and a recommended elective such as English 1015 or 1016. The second year includes Anthropology 2110, Biology 2171, Chemistry 2211 and 2231, one FCE from select upper-year Chemistry, Biology, or Anthropology courses, as well as Biology 2230, 2711, 2910, and one open elective. In third year, students select from a range of advanced interdisciplinary courses including options in Anthropology, Bio-Molecular Science, and Chemistry, along with Chemistry 3251/Biology 3252, Chemistry 3271/Biology 3272, a choice of mathematics or kinesiology stream, and electives from curated lists and open options. In the final year, students complete advanced courses from Lists 1, 2, or 3, along with open electives, to build expertise in specialized areas such as molecular diagnostics, biotechnology, or biomedical research. The program blends classroom learning, lab work, and research, preparing students for graduate studies, medical school, or careers in life science industries.
