COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science (HBSc) in Anthropology is offered at both the Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses and adheres to the academic guidelines set forth by the University Regulations and the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies. This program integrates scientific coursework with comprehensive anthropological study and meets the Indigenous Content Requirement through the completion of Anthropology 1034. In the first year, students are required to take Anthropology 1032 and 1034, English 1015 along with an additional 0.5 FCE in first-year English, and three FCEs selected from a variety of science and quantitative courses including Biology 1050/1051, Chemistry 1110/1130, Geography 1170, Geology 1110/1130, Mathematics 0210/1151/1152, Business 1513, and Physics 1211/1212. The second year includes core Anthropology courses—2110, 2112, 2137, 2515, 2517, and 2151—alongside two FCE electives. In the third year, students take two FCEs in Anthropology from Type C courses, one additional FCE in Anthropology, and two FCE electives, allowing for further academic depth and interdisciplinary exploration. The final year consists of two FCEs in fourth-year Anthropology, one additional Anthropology FCE, and two electives. Students intending to pursue graduate studies are encouraged to complete Anthropology 4901 (Honours Thesis) and consult with faculty for supervision. The HBSc program is ideal for students seeking to combine a strong scientific foundation with a robust understanding of human culture, biology, and behaviour. It provides opportunities for research, lab work, and field training, preparing graduates for careers in archaeology, forensics, cultural resource management, or graduate-level education.
