COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science program with a Geography major at Lakehead University is a four-year degree designed to provide students with a broad understanding of environmental issues through a strong foundation in both environmental studies and geography. In the first year, students take foundational Environmental Studies courses 1170 and 1190, alongside two full-course equivalents (FCEs) in science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics. Additionally, students select one FCE from social sciences or humanities disciplines including Anthropology, Economics, English, History, Indigenous Learning, Philosophy, Political Science, or Sociology. Mathematics 1151 and 1152 or Physics 1113 and 1133 are also required to build analytical skills. The second year deepens knowledge with Environmental Studies 2013 and 2210, one Environmental Studies elective from Type C courses, and several Geography courses such as 2232, 2251, 2271, 2331, 2351, or 2811. Students pursuing a Certificate in Geomatics are advised to take Geography 3253 as an elective in their third year. The third year involves Environmental Studies 3094, Geography 3215, additional Environmental Studies electives, and Geography courses at the third and fourth-year levels, alongside a half FCE elective. In the fourth year, students complete Environmental Studies 4810, further Geography courses at the upper levels, and one and one-half FCE electives. This structure ensures students gain interdisciplinary expertise, combining environmental science with geographic analysis, preparing them for careers or further studies in environmental planning, resource management, or related fields.
