COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Environmental Science (Biology Major) at Lakehead University is a four-year program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in environmental and biological sciences. In the first year, students take core courses in Environmental Studies, Biology, and Chemistry, along with a Type A elective and one full course equivalent (FCE) from Mathematics or Physics, plus a half-credit elective. The second year deepens knowledge with Environmental Studies courses and foundational Biology subjects such as genetics and ecology, complemented by advanced Chemistry and an Environmental Studies Type C elective. Students interested in third-year biochemistry are advised to take Chemistry 2231 as an elective. The third year includes Environmental Studies 3094 and more advanced Type C Environmental Studies courses, with a strong emphasis on Biology through courses like Biology 3112 or 3013, 3012, and two FCEs from the Biology Electives List B, which covers a range of specialized topics. In the final year, students further specialize by choosing Biology 4101 or another fourth-year Biology elective, along with two additional FCEs from the Biology List B. The capstone Environmental Studies 4810 course integrates the program’s interdisciplinary approach, and students complete their studies with one and a half FCEs in electives. This program offers a balance of scientific rigor and applied environmental knowledge, preparing students for careers or further education in environmental science, conservation biology, or related fields, with opportunities to explore both field and laboratory-based research across all four years.
