COURSE CURRICULUM

The four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) program at Lakehead University provides a comprehensive education in both hardware and software systems, blending theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in electrical and electronics technology, logic circuits, computer programming, calculus, and vectors. The winter term includes microcontrollers, engineering chemistry, communications, and advanced programming. In second year, the focus shifts to core software engineering principles, including database systems, object-oriented GUI design, data structures, and computer networking. Courses in mechanics, hardware systems, and technical project work round out the curriculum. Students also begin science electives to broaden their technical background. By third year, students delve into software design, operating systems, compiler and algorithm design, software testing, and data mining, alongside engineering economics and numerical methods. Discrete mathematics and probability further develop analytical skills. In the final year, students explore advanced topics such as software safety, security, networks, image processing, computer vision, embedded systems, and computational intelligence. The program also incorporates project-based learning through a year-long degree project and mandatory courses in professional practice, law, and societal impacts. Students choose engineering electives to tailor their expertise and meet the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) standards. The curriculum integrates complementary studies and Indigenous content (via Sociology 2755), ensuring graduates not only possess technical proficiency but also understand the broader societal and ethical implications of software systems. Upon completion, students are well-equipped to design, develop, and manage complex software systems across various industries.
