COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechatronics Engineering at Lakehead University is a multidisciplinary program that integrates mechanical, electrical, software, and computer engineering to prepare students for the design and development of intelligent systems such as autonomous vehicles, industrial robots, and electromechanical devices. In Year 1, students gain foundational knowledge in programming, calculus, electric circuits, materials, and engineering mechanics, along with practical lab experience. Year 2 builds on this with courses in microcontrollers, digital logic, mechanics of materials, robotics, fluid mechanics, sensors, and measurements, as well as engineering chemistry. By the end of Year 2, students must apply to graduate with an Engineering Technology Diploma. In Year 3, students explore power electronics, embedded systems, machine dynamics, automation, and control systems, complemented by programming and numerical modeling. The curriculum also includes broader perspectives through courses in sociology, economics, and project management. Year 4 emphasizes signal processing, mechanical vibrations, AI for mechatronics, corporate innovation, and professional practice. Students also complete a major design project. A key component of the program is mandatory co-operative education, requiring students to complete a minimum of 1,260 hours across three work terms, integrating academic learning with industry experience. This program stands out for its strong focus on sustainability and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as its emphasis on innovation, entrepreneurship, and public safety. Graduates are well-equipped with the technical, practical, and interdisciplinary skills needed to lead in the rapidly evolving field of mechatronics engineering.
