COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at Lakehead University is a comprehensive four-year program designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies needed for a successful engineering career. The first year focuses on foundational courses such as statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, materials and processes, engineering design, and essential mathematics, alongside courses in electrical and electronics technology and computer programming. In the second year, students delve deeper into core mechanical engineering subjects including machine design, industrial engineering, thermal sciences, engineering measurements, and instrumentation, complemented by applied mathematics and chemistry. At this stage, students are required to apply for an Engineering Technology Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. The third year emphasizes advanced topics such as fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, intermediate mechanics of materials, dynamics of machines, applied heat transfer, engineering physics, computational methods, and mechanical design, as well as complementary studies to broaden knowledge. In the final year, the program culminates with specialized courses in mechanical vibrations, mechanical engineering design, engineering economics, project management, and professional practice and law, along with a major degree project. Students also complete engineering and science electives, a mechanical engineering laboratory, and complementary studies including a course on Technology, Society, and Indigenous Peoples in Canada. This rigorous curriculum is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) and prepares graduates to tackle complex engineering challenges across diverse sectors such as power generation, transportation, and renewable energy with a well-rounded perspective on technical and societal responsibilities.
