COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering at Lakehead University is a comprehensive four-year program designed to equip students with the technical and practical skills needed to excel in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects such as buildings, highways, bridges, airports, and water systems. The first year focuses on foundational courses including civil engineering drawing, statics, mechanics of materials, surveying, professional communications, and mathematics, alongside fluid mechanics and computer programming. In the second year, students delve deeper into construction practice, highway design, steel and reinforced concrete design, water supply and waste systems, soil mechanics, and construction materials, with an emphasis on applied analysis and engineering chemistry. By this point, students are required to apply for the Engineering Technology Diploma in Civil Engineering. The third year expands into advanced topics like mechanics of solids, soil mechanics, structural analysis, hydrology, foundation engineering, steel structures, finite element methods, geology for engineers, numerical analysis, and complementary studies electives. The fourth year includes specialized courses such as materials science, environmental control, reinforced concrete structures, civil engineering analysis, engineering economics, project management, and professional practice and law. Students also complete a significant degree project and select engineering and complementary electives, including a course on Technology, Society, and Indigenous Peoples in Canada. This rigorous curriculum, accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), prepares students to address complex engineering challenges with a strong foundation in both theory and application.
